.. we have already reached more than 100,000 young people in different ways. We have seen them change and become more accepting to the difference, become self aware and mature. Some have joined our staff as volunteers, others are taking this new found confidence into many activities of their daily lives... The roots of Voluntary Youth Philanthropists (VYP) are in the late 90s when a group of young women living in suburbs of Nairobi started a community based organization called ‘Young Ladies’ Sight for their Future”. Since we had been living in the Kangemi slum, we had realized the impact of negative cultural influence in the outskirts of the city like a high rate of school drop-outs, prostitution and early marriage, drug trafficking, increased number of street children and tenant-landlord conflicts. The organisation intended to meet the idleness of young women by addressing the issues affecting them. The women started with theatre and cultural dances as well as skills and talents enhancement for career development as a source of income generating activities. Due to the impact of this group, other youths from various areas of Nairobi including refugee in the communities showed interest and requested for involvement. |
